The Pets Belong with Families Act would ensure that families are not forced to make the impossible choice between keeping their beloved companion and securing affordable housing.
This critical legislation would prohibit public housing from imposing arbitrary pet restrictions based on breed, size or weight. The bill would also set reasonable limitations on pet deposits to better accommodate residents, including an income-based maximum, a three-month period to pay the deposit and reimbursement if there are no pet-related damages.
Importantly, the bill does not prevent public housing from prohibiting dangerous dogs or animals. It simply stops public housing from imposing blanket bans on breeds that are arbitrary, have no scientific backing and do not make communities safer.
