As your constituent, I want to thank you for leading the Pets Belong with Families Act to ensure that people in public housing can keep their beloved pets with them. As you know, the Pets Belong with Families Act would prohibit restrictions on dogs in public housing based on breed, size or weight and sets reasonable limitations to pet deposits. This legislation would help get more families into affordable housing, reduce the number of overburdened shelters and ensure low-income families can experience the many benefits that companion animals provide. As your constituent, I ask that you please cosponsor the Pets Belong with Families Act (H.R. 8378). The Pets Belong with Families Act would prohibit sweeping restrictions on dogs in public housing based on breed, size or weight and set reasonable limitations on pet deposits. This bill aligns with a law in our state that prohibits breed-specific legislation.
Importantly, this bill does not prevent public housing from being able to prohibit dangerous dogs based on actual behavior, but it would remove unreasonable housing barriers for thousands of responsible pet owners. No one should have to decide between giving up a beloved pet and safe, secure, affordable housing. Unfortunately, families experiencing housing insecurity are too often faced with this impossible choice.
Arbitrary restrictions based on breed, size or weight have no scientific backing and do not make communities safer. Dogs should be judged as the individuals they are instead of by erroneous and harmful stereotypes.
