Stop the Slaughter of American Horses

An August 2026 article by The New York Times exposed how hundreds, perhaps thousands, of wild horses — who are supposed to be protected by law — are being funneled into the slaughter pipeline.

Wild horses are an iconic part of American history, but all horses, whether they run free or live alongside of us, are in danger. Tens of thousands of wild and domestic horses fall into the wrong hands and are exported to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption each year.

Horse slaughter is brutal and inherently inhumane, and Americans overwhelmingly oppose it.

The ASPCA has been fighting for a permanent, federal horse slaughter ban for 20 years. That is the only way to protect our nation’s horses from slaughter once and for all. Join us in our efforts to protect wild horses, find good homes for horses in need and finally end horse slaughter.
