Update — March 5, 2025: This bill passed out of committee earlier this week! It can go before the Colorado House of Representatives for a vote at any moment. This is a critical moment for this bill — please take action today!
Colorado lawmakers are considering a new state bill that would remove barriers to pets in housing, making it possible for more Coloradans to find and keep homes that welcome their beloved pets. Urge your state representative to support this bill!
To keep pets and people together, this bill has a few big benefits. It would require housing providers who receive state subsidies to allow pets. This would improve housing stability and quality of life for lower income individuals and reduce the number of animals surrendered to animal shelters. The bill would also enable landlords to welcome any breed of dog, because it prohibits insurance companies from including breed restrictions in multi-family insurance policies.
Families face huge barriers when searching for a home with their pets. In addition to the straightforward “No Pets!” rule, they often encounter policies that limit how many pets they can own or that discriminate against a dog’s breed or weight. For low-income families, the barriers to pet friendly housing can be even more challenging.
Pets are considered part of the family by the vast majority of households, yet an increasing number of pet owners are being forced to surrender their animals due to restrictive and costly policies. It’s tearing apart homes and flooding city shelters with pets who could have remained with their families if these barriers didn’t exist. Legislation like H.B. 25-1207 can improve our current housing crisis.
