Walk for a Dog

We all have distinct images of animal shelters as a place where dogs are crammed into cages, barking uncontrolably in order to gain attention from anyone they encounter. We imagine animals pressed up against the doors  of their cages trying to get out, or draw more attention to themselves than the other dogs are able to in the kennel. We assume that the dogs are kept in unsanitary conditions, waiting for someone to notice them as they walk by, broken and sick. Shelters are imagined as a heartbreaking place for the animals, where nothing matters besides the prospective adaptor who will save the animals life.

In reality shelters are much more than that. Volunteers and workers spends days on end working with the animals to socialize and nurse them back to health. They are carefully placed in cages with dogs they are compatible with and are monitored to make sure they eat, drink and are able to peacefully sleep. Each animal is given personal attention in order to restore their confidence after the traumatic events they have gone through. Many times animals are picked up from the side of the road, taken from abusive homes or confiscated from animal hoarders. These animals are usually in such bad conditions that they need weeks of careful handing and assessment for the workers to be able find them the perfect home.  Lots of them come in with severe injuries requiring treatment, surgery and sadly, in some cases we aren't able to save their lives. However after all the time we spend with each dog, we develop a close bond with them. It is a personal achievement to turn a scared, unsocialized dog into the happy puppy adopters are able to take home. Though it is sad to see the animals leave, we must trust that they are being placed into safe, caring hands and will never be put through the hardships they experienced again. In order for shelters to be able to operate in such ways donations are needed to provide food, medical attention and transportation.

The ASPCA is very important to me personally since I have experienced the affects of human cruelty on aminals first hand and hope to give more animals opportunities at a better life. Each and every animal deserves to be loved and cherished and I appreciate your help as we fight to give abused and homeless animals a second chance at life.

I am excited to announce that I will be raising funds for animals in need. We will be holding a community dog walk in Houston, TX over the summer to raise funds for the ASPCA. Further details about the dog walk will be shared closer to the event, such as location, date and time.
