Running for Ben (Again)
On March 19, 2017, I will be participating in the 2017 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon as a member of Team ASPCA, a national fundraising and endurance training program. I am excited to be participating as a member of Team ASPCA and honored to be raising awareness and funding to support the ASPCA's programs. Your donation will help the ASPCA provide life-saving programs and services to millions of animals nationwide. Moreover, your support could help foster a life-changing relationship — between a rescue and an adopter.
My family adopted Ben, a very skinny German shepherd mix, in 2005. He might have been born in 2001, somewhere in North Jersey. He might have had a home, or made his own — a box in the faculty parking lot at Columbia High School, or under the baseball bleachers in Maplewood Memorial Park — before he entered ours. Or maybe he’d lived in a cage outside the house of an owner who didn’t want him, his teeth worn down from gnawing on the bars. Whatever Ben's history may be, it wasn't important to us. We knew that a woman had found him wandering the streets of the town neighboring ours, and she couldn’t keep him for much longer. So Ben came home with us and, with the exception of a few wildlife chases during his salad days, stayed for 10 years.
Not every abandoned animal is so fortunate — to be found, fed, walked and loved. And not every family is so lucky to have a kind, calm, loyal pet appear, essentially, at their doorstep. I'm running with Team ASPCA in Ben's honor, but also because there are so many more rescue success stories to be told.
About the ASPCA: Fighting for animals is a 24/7 job, but your commitment makes it possible for our life-saving programs to create happy endings for those innocent lives touched by cruelty. Every single day of the year, we are rescuing animals from neglect and suffering. With your support, we are able to rescue animals from cruelty, work to end animal homelessness and provide medical care for countless pets in need. Please help us save even more animals and donate to this Team ASPCA campaign today. Interested in joining the team? Learn More »
