Emma Koshka
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Emma Koshka's fundraiser page- a place to celebrate Emma Koshka's life and personality, and raise money for the ASPCA since we lost Emma too quickly due to animal neglect.
A quick background on Emma: Emma was rescued on April 2nd, 2009 in Sunnyside Queens. Emma was abandoned at a local pet groomer in a purse, and the groomer was unable to keep Emma since she already had multiple cats. Leann went in to meet Emma, and Emma immediately hissed at Leann. It was love at first sight and a perfect fit! The pet groomer already named her Emma, and Leann added the Koshka (meaning "cat" (female) in Russian).
Leann and Emma moved together to San Francisco in January 2010. Emma adapted quickly and mellowed out a bit, loving the Bay Area. Leann and Jeremy moved in together in Pacifica in 2012 and Emma became an indoor/ outdoor cat. She loved lying in the sun, catching gophers, snakes, and mice- she loved roaming, jumping, and exploring, but did not like other cats! Friends and family adored Emma in Pacifica, she was always treated as a family member. She had a strong personalty, both sweet and sassy- and she knew how to communicate well.
Emma spent the last months of her life in Humboldt County, California. Her life was tragically cut short by animal neglect. Leann and Jeremy went on vacation and hired a local pet sitter. Upon return, they found Emma closed in their bedroom without food and water (there are more details but they are too upsetting- and this page is to focus on Emma life, not her tragedy). This tragedy happened in Emma's home, a place that is her safe space. Emma Koshka developed end stage renal failure in days due to lack of nutrition and dehydration, and it could not be reversed after intensive vet care. Emma chose to pass with dignity over a lifetime of intensive medical treatment to stabilize the condition, and we respect her decision. She did give Jeremy one final "swat" during her last minutes- opening our relationship with a hiss and closing it with a swat.
Unfortunately, animals are viewed by our judicial system as "property" and there is no persecution or accountability for the pet sitter. Animal neglect is serious- it cut Emma Koshka's life short, and it is heartbreaking to invision her suffering experience locked in a room for an amount of time that we will never know. Emma Koshka was seriously loved for the past seven years, a love so strong that she was able to develop her sassy personality.
Please consider donating to Emma Koshka's ASPCA fundraiser. This money is not for Leann or Jeremy. It is to support an organization that supports animals, provides pet loss bereavement support, and helps with laws to protect animals from people who consider animals as property. Please help Emma Koshka's legacy by helping this not happen to other creatures. Take time to care for your own pets, for other animals, volunteering, because the love and support we are receiving is helping us remember that we gave Emma a beautiful home. Emma Koshka was not a pet, she was a family member and we just had a family member taken away from us. Thank you.

About the ASPCA: Fighting for animals is a 24/7 job, but your commitment makes it possible for our life-saving programs to create happy endings for those innocent lives touched by cruelty. Every single day of the year, we are rescuing animals from neglect and suffering. With your support, we are able to rescue animals from dog fighting, cockfighting, and puppy mills, work to end animal homelessness and farm animal cruelty, and provide medical care for countless pets in need.
