Lazy Cats Run the Big Apple 2017!

When my colleagues and friends on the ASPCA Field & Investigations Team talk about their work, they always say it’s not enough to remove the animal from the dangerous situation, be it a puppy mill or a hurricane. Nope, they’re not satisfied until they rescue the animal to the couch. That means the animal is in a loving new home (or reunited with his or her family), and success is measured in naps and sighs and snuggles and snores. Or, if they’re like my 3 guys, the little ear flutters and toe/whisker wiggles they do when they’re dreaming.

Happy, relaxed, lazy as they wanna be…. Hence, my campaign theme for this year’s New York City Marathon—Lazy Cats Run the Big Apple!

My personal goal is to run my most relaxed marathon so far. My Chi Running coach, who also happens to be a yoga teacher, encourages us to try easy instead of trying hard. And you know what? It works. Everything is better when you’re more relaxed, including heinous 5-mile tempo runs, 6 X 800 repeats on the track (UGGH!) and sloppy, soppy sweaty 13-milers that’ll turn into 20 milers as we get deep into training. It’s no nap on the couch, but Ira, Derrick and Lorenzo will be happy to oblige on my behalf. (And P.S. I’m making it sound worse than it is for dramatic effect.)
