Gina & Q Run 4 Animals
This year, I have decided to run for Team ASPCA again and on November 5, 2017, I will be participating in the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon! This is a dream come true. With both animal rescue work and my marathon running people often say “I don’t know how you do it” and I want to respond – “I don’t know how you don’t.” I find myself drawing parallels between the two. In both - I face challenges, hit walls, face pain and suffering, get so overwhelmed and frustrated I want to give up BUT I dig deep and keep moving forward. I continue fighting and put one foot in front of the other and recognize that through determination and heart there is also joy and victory. There are the happy tails, the animals that are reunited with their families or are rescued from cruelty and suffering and given love, compassion and second chance.
I get that being on the front lines of animal welfare or running isn't for everyone but anyone who has ever talked to me knows that there are a few things I’m absolutely crazy about next to my family and friends, you know – the kind of passion that you speak from the heart…Those two things are running (yes, putting one foot in front of the other, sweating, huffing and puffing and torturing one’s self for hours on end) AND my job - helping animals (I know I’m one of the luckiest people in the world.) I am combining the two for my FOURTH marathon in 2017.
Have I lost my dang mind? Without a doubt. But after 3 brain surgeries I have a few loose screws and some cement in there, plus we all know marathon runners are insane. But more importantly this is an opportunity for me to share my passion. To share my love for animals and running and to acknowledge the importance of discipline, hard work, dedication, determination, perserverance and heart that it takes to not only run 26.2 miles not once or twice, but four times in one year – but also to dedicate your life to giving a voice to animals through rescue my career with the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team all while managing a chronic pain condition.
Among the many things in my life, I am grateful for animals, the forward progress we continue to make in animal welfare, the good days when my neuropathic pain condition allows me to run, Quincy – my amazing running buddy who is always by my side excited to run not matter when or where or how far we go and keeps me safe on our long runs, my determination and hard headed attitude that keeps me going through all the challenges life throws at me in both animal rescue work and running, the ability to inspire others in both animal welfare and running and of all of my family, friends and colleagues that support me through this journey.
You don't have to come volunteer on the frontlines with the ASPCA or run a marathon with me although I will likely try to convince you someday if I have not already - BUT - you can make a difference by supporting me as I commit to run for animals and run with purpose. Your donation will help the ASPCA provide life-saving programs and services to millions of animals nationwide. And it is so much more. It will encourage and keep me running as I hit my wall on race day, struggle through tough training runs without crowds and aide stations passing out gatorade, face challeges in day to day life or on the front lines with FIR.
Thank you in advance and I hope to see you along the race course cheering us all along.
About the ASPCA: Fighting for animals is a 24/7 job, but your commitment makes it possible for our life-saving programs to create happy endings for those innocent lives touched by cruelty. Every single day of the year, we are rescuing animals from neglect and suffering. With your support, we are able to rescue animals from cruelty, work to end animal homelessness and provide medical care for countless pets in need. Please help us save even more animals and donate to this Team ASPCA campaign today. Interested in joining the team? Learn More »
