Tell Government: Investigate Disease Outbreak Traced to Puppy Mills

Many irresponsible commercial dog breeders (a.k.a. puppy mills) feed their dogs antibiotics—not waiting until they’re actually sick—because animals kept in filthy conditions and denied proper veterinary care are so likely to become ill. But we know that overuse of antibiotics can cause them to stop working. And we now also know that puppy mills are putting human health at risk, too.

Between 2016-2018, a dangerous infection tore through at least 17 states. The antibiotic-resistant disease originated from puppy mill puppies sold at Petland stores. More than 100 people who came into contact with these dogs fell ill—including pet store employees and children—but the true scope of this outbreak remains unknown.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants to gather more information about what happened, including identifying additional victims and the role played by the pet industry’s irresponsible practices. Please sign our petition urging the CDC to move forward with this important investigation!
