45,000 Wild Horses Facing Death: Stop This Outrage

BREAKING NEWS: An advisory board to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed that the agency eliminate more than 45,000 of America’s wild horses and burros, either by selling them indiscriminately—a course that dooms the animals to slaughter—or killing them outright. The Board does not have the power to implement this barbaric plan, but the mere suggestion of it creates a dangerous situation for our mustangs. Public opposition to this appalling proposal must be immediate and loud.

This proposal shows an alarming disregard for the BLM’s legal duty to protect these cultural icons. It also puts our treasured wild horses and burros at grave risk of one of the worst forms of cruelty an equine can experience: slaughter for human consumption.

The ASPCA has repeatedly urged the BLM to use proven, humane population management methods (such as birth control and returning them to their previously inhabited rangelands) to preserve and protect wild horses and burros on the range. Its failure to do so has led directly to this lethal recommendation.

A mass killing of our wild horses and burros would be unspeakably cruel and would do nothing to fix the BLM’s shameful history and ongoing mismanagement. Why should our wild mustangs pay the ultimate price for the BLM’s ineptitude and failures?
