Dear Legislator,
As your constituent and a supporter of the ASPCA, I ask you to please cosponsor the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act, H.R. 909/S. 322, if you have not done so already. This legislation will provide much-needed protections for victims of domestic violence and their pets.
This bipartisan legislation will expand the Violence Against Women Act’s interstate stalking provisions to make crossing state lines to injure pets an offense punishable by up to five years in prison. The bill will also allow victims to recover veterinary costs and will provide help and housing options to victims and their at-risk pets.
Too often, victims of domestic violence remain in dangerous relationships out of fear for the safety of their pets. The PAWS Act will enable victims to escape abusive situations and seek shelter, across state lines if necessary, without fear of violent retribution against the pets they may be forced to leave behind.
