Please Expand Access to Veterinary Telemedicine in RI

Dear Speaker Shekarchi,
Thank you for your longstanding support for pet adoption and animal welfare. As a Rhode Islander, I am writing to urge you to support legislation that modernizes Rhode Island’s veterinary laws by expanding access to safe, convenient veterinary telemedicine. The veterinary industry is facing a serious shortage of veterinarians, with pet owners and animal shelters struggling to access veterinary care. As we have seen in human medicine, expanding access to telemedicine helps bridge gaps in care created by workforce shortages and other barriers. Veterinary telemedicine can make a big difference for Rhode Islanders who face challenges getting their pets to clinics due to affordability, disability, transportation issues or because they have fearful, aggressive or anxious pets. Increasing access to veterinary telemedicine helps senior pet owners, those who live in underserved areas and working families who may struggle to access veterinary clinics during business hours. Please ensure that Rhode Island’s residents can benefit from the safety and convenience of quality veterinary telemedicine by supporting the amended version of H.B. 5555 to enable pet owners and veterinarians to establish a relationship through telehealth technology. Thank you for your time and consideration of my views.
