Thank You for Cosponsoring the PETSAFE Act, H.R. 5175

Dear Representative
As your constituent and a supporter of The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), I am writing to thank you for cosponsoring the Providing Essential Temporary Shelter Assistance for Emergencies (PETSAFE) Act—H.R. 5175. This legislation will expand shelter accommodations for household pets during emergencies and natural disasters. Specifically, the bill will establish a pilot program providing funding to state, local, and tribal governments to create new mobile pet shelters during disasters. Natural disasters are increasing in frequency and severity. The lack of pet-friendly emergency housing often forces families to make the painful decision to evacuate without their pets, which is traumatic for both owner and pet and increases the animals’ risk of harm. The pilot program established by the PETSAFE Act would better ensure that animals are not displaced due to inadequate shelter and that families are safely reunified with their furry family members after evacuation. Again, thank you for supporting this important legislation so that when disasters and emergencies arise, families do not have to choose between their own safety and their pet’s safety.

With natural disasters increasing in frequency and severity, it is important that families have access to pet-friendly emergency housing. No family should be forced to make the painful decision to evacuate without their pets. The PETSAFE Act creates a much-needed opportunity to expand shelter accommodations for household pets during emergencies and natural disasters to better ensure that animals are not displaced due to inadequate sheltering options and that families are safely reunified with their furry family members after evacuation. Again, thank you for leading the charge on this important legislation so that when disasters and emergencies arise, families do not have to choose between their own safety and their pet’s safety.
