As your constituent who cares about farm animal welfare and building a more humane food system, I am asking you to cosponsor the Farm System Reform Act. This legislation will reform our farming system by placing a moratorium on the construction and expansion of large concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) with a complete phaseout of large CAFOs by 2040. The bill will also provide much-needed funding to help farmers transition to more humane and sustainable farming methods. Factory farming prioritizes efficiency and profits at the expense of animal welfare, the environment, food workers, consumers, rural communities and farmers. We must move away from the inhumane, destructive factory farming system and support the transition to a more humane, sustainable and just food system. A recent 2020 poll shows that 74% of Americans think the government should be supporting farmers transitioning to more humane practices. The Farm System Reform Act is a critical first step in this direction. Farm animal welfare is a priority for me, and I hope you’ll support this important legislation.
