Please Cosponsor and Help Pass A. 2354!

Dear Legislator,
As a resident of New Jersey and your constituent, I am reaching out to ask you to (1) cosponsor A. 2354 and (2) urge the Assembly Agriculture Committee and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to pass this critical bill to help animals under the protection and care of New Jersey’s taxpayer- and donor-supported animal shelters. A. 2354 will allow shelters to seek reimbursement from pet owners to cover the costs of caring for animals placed in their custody by humane law enforcement. Large-scale or lengthy animal cruelty cases can break the banks of already cash-strapped shelters, preventing critical resources from going to other homeless, abused or at-risk animals. Additionally, if shelters are unable to receive animals due to a lack of space or money to pay for their care, law enforcement may hesitate to remove animals from cruelty situations, impeding the effective enforcement of the state’s cruelty and animal fighting laws. For these reasons, most states—including Connecticut and New York—already have Cost of Animal Care laws. A. 2354 is the only solution for New Jersey’s animal welfare organizations and long overdue for passage in New Jersey. Please cosponsor this critical legislation and urge the Assembly Agriculture Committee and Assembly Speaker Coughlin to pass it. Thank you for your time and consideration of my position.
