Dear Legislator,
As your constituent who cares about farm animal welfare and building a more humane food system, I am asking you to cosponsor the Safe Line Speeds During COVID-19 Act.
This legislation will prohibit dangerous extreme-speed slaughter systems for pigs, chickens, and cattle from operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. This will help protect animals from inhumane slaughter, and also protect workers from the dangerous of extremely fast slaughter lines, and from the spread of coronavirus. Slowing down the lines will enable plants to protect workers and implement social distancing protocols.
Extreme-speed slaughter systems endanger animals, workers, and our food supply. According to the Washington Post, public records show that meat from pig slaughterhouses that were allowed to operate at faster speeds contained higher rates of contamination from fecal and digestive matter, which contain deadly pathogens such as E. coli and salmonella.
The Safe Line Speeds During COVID-19 Act is a step forward in addressing dangerously fast line speeds and protecting animals, workers, and public health by preventing their use during the COVID-19 emergency.
