Support passage of S.1923 with no further changes

Dear Assemblymember,
As your constituent, I respectfully ask you to urge Assembly Speaker Coughlin to bring S.1923 — as amended and passed unanimously in the Senate—to a vote in the Assembly Agriculture Committee and on the Assembly floor. Under New Jersey’s current dangerous dog law, dogfighting victims face unfair labeling as “vicious” or “potentially dangerous,” along with the threat of confinement and destruction, even if their behavior does not warrant it. Fear of heightened liability due to the damaging labels imposed by this outmoded law may also discourage rescuers’ and adopters’ intervention. Additionally, dog fighting prosecutions—which would necessarily implicate the canine victims—might even be avoided to spare dogs from harmful and inappropriate labeling under the dangerous dog law. S.1923 would revise the law to help ensure that dogs used in the heinous “sport” of dogfighting are treated as the cruelty victims they are and evaluated only on their actual behavior, rather than being punished because of their history of abuse. Thank you in advance for reaching out to Speaker Coughlin regarding S.1923 and working to ensure quick passage of this important humane bill as is.

Dear Speaker Coughlin,
As a New Jersey resident, I respectfully urge you to bring S.1923—as amended and passed unanimously in the Senate—to a quick vote in the Assembly Agriculture Committee and on the Assembly floor. Dogs used in the heinous “sport” of dogfighting are cruelty victims, but under New Jersey’s current dangerous dog law, many face unwarranted confinement or destruction. Fear of heightened liability due to the labels imposed by this outmoded law may also discourage rescuers’ and adopters’ intervention. In addition, dog fighting prosecutions—which would necessarily implicate the canine victims—might be avoided to spare dogs from harmful and inappropriate labeling under the dangerous dog law. S.1923 would revise the law to help ensure that dogs subjected to dogfighting are treated as the cruelty victims they are and evaluated only on their actual behavior, not punished because of their history of being abused. Thank you in advance for supporting quick passage of this important humane bill as is.
