Support the amendment to ban funding for horse slaughter

Dear Senator,
As your constituent and a supporter of equine welfare, I urge you to vote YES on the Udall-Graham Amendment to the FY18 Agriculture Appropriations bill that will continue the ban on the use of federal tax dollars for horse slaughter. This amendment has received strong bipartisan support for several years and I urge you to continue that history. Current law bans the use of tax dollars for inspections of horse slaughterhouses (preventing their operation), saving us millions of dollars that would be diverted for this inhumane and unnecessary purpose. It is essential that Congress keep this grisly industry off of U.S. soil. Eighty percent of Americans are against horse slaughter and 2.3 million homes are waiting to adopt horses--we don’t need to send our horses to commercial slaughter plants. We do not want our tax dollars squandered on something we do not consume, or diverted away from food inspections that protect our own citizens. Thank you for your attention to this important issue, and please do everything you can to protect our horses from slaughter.

Protect America’s horses from slaughter

Dear Legislator,
As your constituent and a supporter of equine welfare, I urge you to do everything in your power to keep the grisly horse slaughter industry out of the U.S. The last horse slaughterhouses in the U.S. closed their doors in 2007, but if the FY18 Agriculture Appropriations bill fails to include the language blocking funding for inspections of horse slaughterhouses, this predatory industry will leap to set up shop in our country. Horse slaughter is unnecessary and cruel--it is not a form of euthanasia. Eighty percent of Americans oppose horse slaughter and 2.3 million homes can take in horses right now. I support a full federal ban on horse slaughter (the Safeguard American Foods Act, H.R. 113), but for now, it is critical that we retain the horse slaughter inspection prohibition language for the FY 2018 Agriculture Appropriations bill. Thank you for your attention to this important issue, and please do everything you can to protect our horses, domestic and wild, from slaughter.
