USA: Support Protections for Wild Horses and Burros

Wild horses
BLM Management and the FY 2023 Federal Budget
ASPCA Position: Support

Right now, two separate and important things are happening: Congress is advancing the spending bill that will help determine the future for our iconic wild horses and burros, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)—the agency legally responsible for the care and oversight of these herds—is making ongoing decisions about how to manage them.

Our nation’s wild horses and burros face many threats due to decades of mismanagement. Congress has begun to chart a new, more humane and sustainable path forward for these iconic herds to safeguard their future, but the work on the ground has barely begun. Federal lawmakers must hold BLM accountable through the 2023 Interior Appropriations bill by pushing the agency to employ proven safe and humane fertility control vaccines, and strictly enforce federal protections afforded to these magnificent animals both on and off the range. The BLM must heed these directives and Congress must emphasize their importance.

What You Can Do

Please use the form below to (1) email your members of Congress and urge them to support funding and directives in the FY 2023 Interior Appropriations bill, and (2) tell the Department of Interior that you want to see a nationwide fertility control program implemented immediately. These steps are critical to protecting our nation’s wild horses and burros.

Congress needs to hear from advocates like you today before they finalize this important bill! And the BLM must know that the public will hold them accountable to manage these majestic herds.

Thank you for speaking up for our nation’s equines.
