This state bill would prevent commercial breeders from trucking their cruelly bred puppies into our communities, ending the Commonwealth’s participation in the horrific puppy mill pipeline.
Out-of-state commercial breeding facilities for puppies, kittens and rabbits supply pet stores in Massachusetts via a pipeline of middlemen. These commercial breeders treat animals like products—their only goal is to produce the highest number of animals at the lowest possible cost, and animals are often sick, injured or malnourished and are confined in crowded, filthy cages.
This harmful system is driven by profit and made possible because Massachusetts state law still allows the sale of cruelly bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. Even though Boston, Plymouth, Cambridge, and other localities have passed laws ending this practice, cruelly bred animals are still sold in many other parts of the Bay State.
New York, Maryland, and California have succeeded in passing similar laws. Massachusetts should be next!
